What is SOTG?
Spirit of the Game (SOTG) is one of the core elements in flying disc sports.
It is similar to fair play and sportspersonship, but flying disc sports put further emphasis on it, as explained in the first rules of Ultimate (1.1, 1.2, and 1.4):
1.1 Ultimate is a non-contact, self-officiated sport. All players are responsible for administering and adhering to the rules. Ultimate relies upon a Spirit of the Game that places the responsibility for fair play on every
player.
1.2. It is trusted that no player will intentionally break the rules; thus there are no harsh penalties for
inadvertent breaches, but rather a method for resuming play in a manner which simulates what would
most likely have occurred had there been no breach.
1.4 Highly competitive play is encouraged, but should never sacrifice the mutual respect between players,
adherence to the agreed-upon rules of the game, player safety or the basic joy of play.
Actions such as intentional fouling, cheating, dangerous plays, disrespectful conversations, and other ‘win at all costs’ behaviour are contrary to the Spirit of the Game. Often a player is in a position where it is to their advantage to foul or commit some violation, but that player is morally bound to know, administer and abide by the rules fairly. The integrity of flying disc sports depends on each player’s responsibility to uphold Spirit of the Game, and this responsibility should not be taken lightly.
While currently only formalised in the Ultimate rules, Spirit of the Game is applied in other flying disc sports and can be utilised in all kinds of other sports or even in life beyond. It is a great tool for conflict resolution by taking ownership and responsibility in the fairness of a larger a shared experience, rather than a zero-sum game for one's own benefit.
The International Spirit of the Game Day (#iSOTGDay) is our opportunity to not just celebrate but also share the concept go SOTG and flying disc sports within and beyond our community by reflection, discussion, engagement and advocacy.
