Offside calls on short/poor pulls...
Under Rule 7.5.2, suppose the offence calls “offside” while the pull is in the air. The pull is then very short and lands untouched in a position that is more advantageous to the offence than the brick mark (maybe the wind took it last second to make it short or maybe the offence just misjudged the flight of the pull and it landed shorter than expected).
I found the previous forum answer from Reuben stating that the “must” in 7.5.2 relates to the requirement to let the pull land if the offence wants the brick option, and that it would be reasonable for the offence to ignore the brick scenario if they do not want it.
Assuming that interpretation still applies under the 2025–2028 rules:
1. Can the offence simply pick up the disc where it landed after a pull and immediately continue play even if they called offside?
2. Does the offence need to communicate that they are declining the brick option, for example by saying “play on” or something similar?
3. Conversely, if they do want the brick option after calling offside, do they need to give the normal brick signal (one arm fully extended overhead), or does the original offside call itself count as sufficient indication that they are taking the brick? (I assume a brick signal after an offside signal would be especially important if there is the option to decline a brick after calling offside)
My concern is that otherwise this could be confusing for the defence. If offence calls “offside” and lets the pull hit the ground, defenders may reasonably expect the disc to be taken to the brick mark. If offence can instead immediately pick it up and play from where it landed without any further signal, that could potentially catch the defence by surprise.
Also, just to confirm: does the offence’s offside call itself cause any stoppage of play, or should all players continue playing normally while the pull is in the air, then maybe come to a stoppage after the pull hits the ground?
